Join our Christmas

Who is in the mood for some Christmas fun? If that appeals to you, then why not join the Bexhill URC Christmas Choir. No, we are not going to gather together in person, no matter how good that would be. Instead, our Minister Terry is inviting you to record two carols and then send them to him. He will put everyone's voices and pictures together and, hey presto, we have a choir. The resulting video will appear on this website.

Here, you will find two videos: one of Janet playing O Come All Ye Faithfull, and another of Gerald playing O Little Town of Bethlehem. Click on the videos to hear the music.

The idea is that you record yourself as you sing along to the music. Please sing the words as they are given here. That means we will all be in unison.

What is very important is that you listen to the music through headphones or an ear piece so that it does not appear on your recording. So, only your voice and no music, please. It might be a very good idea to listen to the music once or twice, to make sure that you come in on time.

In addition to your lovely voices, if you wish, you can also add a musical instrument.

Please can you record your videos in landscape mode, also called letterbox mode.

Terry would prefer to have a video recording from you, but if that is impossible then an audio recording will do.

Please send your recordings to Terry's email address - you will find this in the church fellowship roll. He needs them by the end of November.

If you have any questions then give Terry a ring - his phone number is also in the fellowship roll.

NB Please see below for some good tips from Terry to help you with your recording.

Things to think about when you record

  • Think about what is behind you in the video — stand where the background is either plain, or else ‘less busy’ — we want YOU to be the focus.

  • Someone else should hold the camera so that you can be “framed” so that you are visible from your waist up.

  • Think about your facial expressions — it’s difficult to be an “expressive choir singer” when you are not standing with the rest of the choir — that’s true! Even so, see if you can make your performance expressive. You’ll need to look at the words, of course, but try to look up at the camera every so often so that the viewers of the video feel like you are connecting with them.

  1. Gather up either 2 smartphones, or 1 smartphone and a computer, as well as earbuds or headphones.

  2. Go to a quiet room where you will not be disturbed.

  3. Set up the first phone 1-3 feet from your face for video/audio recording purposes.

  4. Set up the second device, either a phone or computer, so that you can easily see and hear the video while you record.

  5. Connect your earbuds or headphones to the listening device and put them in, or on, your ears.

  6. Partially uncover one ear so that you can hear yourself sing while recording.

  7. Open the video of Janet or Gerald on the listening device.

  8. Open your video camera app on your smartphone. Turn the phone horizontally for the best video frame.

  9. When you are ready, tap record on your recording device. Make sure the camera is rolling.

  10. Then press play on Janet or Gerald's video. The sound should only be going through your earbuds or headphones to your ears. You do not want room noise.

  11. Sing the carol and click 'stop recording' on your recording device when finished.

  12. Try to record your singing/playing in one take since this will make editing a lot easier for Terry. It may require a couple of attempts, and that’s OK. We all get nervous, and we all mess up. Have fun, and don’t worry too much!

  13. Once you are satisfied with your recording, send the video to Terry via email. This is the easiest way to share it.  You may find that the your video file size is to big to send. In that case, just tell Terry and he will send you a link that will help you to send the file.

  14. You’re done -- congrats on your hard work! Now all you have to do is wait for the big finished project reveal.

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight

For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth

How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is given
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heaven
No ear may hear His coming
But in this world of sin
Where meek souls will receive him still
The dear Christ enters in

O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born in us today
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel

O come, all ye faithful

Joyful and triumphant!
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem!
Come and behold him

Born the King of angels

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him

Christ, the Lord!

God of God,

Light of Light
Lo! he abhors not the Virgin's womb
Son of the Father,

Begotten, not created

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him

Christ, the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels

Sing in exultation
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above
Glory to God

In the highest!

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him

Christ, the Lord!
